How to Clean Your Home Properly: 6 Practical Tips

Cleaning your own home often falls short simply because of the wrong order or method, leading to more mess and repeated work. Here are 6 tips to help you clean more efficiently.

1. Top to bottom, inside to outside

Clean high areas first (e.g. the top of cabinets, fans) — dust falls down, so clean the floor after. Clean inner rooms first and areas near the door last, to avoid walking back through areas you've already cleaned and dirtying them again.

2. Use the right product for each surface, and be careful mixing products

Marble, wood flooring, stainless steel, and glass each suit different cleaning products — check the label for what it's meant for. Never mix bleach-based and acid/ammonia-based products, as this can produce harmful gases.

3. Microfibre cloths reduce how much chemical cleaner you need

Microfibre cloths already have good cleaning power on their own — combined with just water, they can handle most everyday surface cleaning, reducing chemical use and the chance of leaving marks behind.

4. Pay attention to high-touch surfaces

Door handles, light switches, remote controls, fridge handles — these everyday high-touch spots accumulate germs easily. Pay extra attention to them when cleaning, and use a disinfectant spray if needed.

5. Regular cleaning is easier than one big clean

A little cleaning every week or two beats waiting until things are filthy and doing one huge clean — staying on top of it regularly reduces build-up and makes each cleaning session much lighter work.

When should you consider hiring a professional?

If time is limited, your unit is large, or you need a one-off deep clean after renovation or before moving out, doing it yourself may end up costing more in time than hiring a professional. Try our “DIY or Hire” calculator for an objective comparison.
