Moving Checklist: What to Do at Every Stage, Before and After
Moving isn't just about carrying furniture — it also involves a pile of admin: cancelling broadband, transferring accounts, notifying everyone of your new address. It's easy to miss something. Here's everything laid out in chronological order.
4 weeks before moving: set a date, compare quotes
Confirm your moving date and start comparing quotes from moving companies. You can also start sorting out furniture and appliances you don't want — decide whether to donate, sell, or dispose of them.
2 weeks before moving: sort out utilities and other accounts
Notify your broadband provider to arrange transfer or cancellation, notify electricity and gas companies to arrange account transfer, and update your address with your bank, insurer, and MPF provider.
1 week before moving: pack and confirm details
Confirm you have the keys to your new place, start packing most of your belongings (heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes), and arrange disposal of large furniture/old appliances.
The day before moving: final preparations
Reconfirm the moving company's arrival time, pack an essentials bag for moving day (ID documents, keys, charger, medication), empty and defrost the fridge, and switch off water/electricity to appliances.
Moving day: check and hand over
Before the movers leave, check every room for anything left behind, record the utility meter readings at your old place, and if it's a rental, return the keys to the landlord/management office and take photos as proof.
1 week after moving: update your address
If needed, update your ID card address at Immigration, update vehicle registration with the Transport Department, and update the address on your bank cards, credit cards, and insurance policies.
