Pest control
Pest control products: how products are chosen for each pest
Cockroaches, ants, rodents and mosquitoes all behave differently and need different products and methods. This page lists the product types and examples commonly used in professional pest control in Hong Kong, so you can see what we consider when treating a pest problem.
Please note before reading
This information is compiled from suppliers' public descriptions for reference only. It is not a product recommendation and nothing is sold online. Insecticides and rodenticides must be used according to the product label and safety information; work involving chemicals, baits and application is best left to professionals. Which products are actually used depends on the pests, the environment and your household.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches mostly hide in kitchens, pipes and gaps. Gel baits and bait stations work well placed where they're often seen, so cockroaches eat the bait and carry it back to the nest.
Advion Cockroach Gel
A highly attractive gel bait. The supplier states it can be used indoors and outdoors, including in food handling areas, and covers the main cockroach species.
Advion cockroach bait stations
Bait stations placed near where cockroaches hide or are often seen, suitable for homes, hotels, restaurants, hospitals, schools and other premises.
Ants
Ants carry food along fixed routes, so gel baits target the nest more effectively than spraying alone.
Optigard ant gel bait
Syngenta
A clear, low-odour gel bait that doesn't easily stain surfaces; its thicker texture holds its shape after application and copes better with heat.
Rodents
Rodent control starts with finding entry points and runs, then uses bait stations, baits or glue boards. Where there are pets or children, baits must be placed in lockable bait stations and arranged by professionals.
TALON rodenticide (brodifacoum)
An anticoagulant rodent bait that takes effect a few days after feeding, so other rodents are less likely to become wary.
Brodifacoum 0.005% rodent bait
A bait from the same range, used with bait stations depending on the site.
Racumin paste bait
A paste bait with attractants such as vegetable fat, which rodents accept readily.
Coumatetralyl 0.75% tracking powder (殺鼠迷)
A tracking powder spread along runs or at burrows; rodents pick up the powder as they pass and ingest it while grooming.
Glue boards
A chemical-free physical trap for places where baits aren't convenient; they need checking regularly.
Rodent bait stations
Hold the bait, reducing contact with children and pets and keeping the bait more stable.
Whole-home spraying and space treatment
Residual sprays are used on surfaces pests cross, such as wall bases, gaps and around pipes; fogging or space sprays are used where flying insects are active.
保安定 (broad-spectrum hygiene insecticide)
A broad-spectrum public health insecticide for mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, ants, fleas and more, which stays on walls and floors as a residual treatment.
Fendona 10% SC
BASF
For cockroaches, flies, mosquitoes, ants, bed bugs and more; labelled colourless and odourless, and can be used as a residual spray.
殲樂 (space and residual insecticide)
Used to control flying insects, and also as a residual spray where cockroaches are active, with thermal fogging, cold fogging and other sprayers.
Demand CS microencapsulated suspension (大滅)
A microencapsulated formula that releases the active ingredient slowly for longer residual effect.
保殺 20% EC
For public health pests, effective against cockroaches, and usable in homes, hotels, restaurants, warehouses, hospitals and other premises.
Solfac EW 050
A water-based emulsion for residual spraying of walls and cracks, which can also be diluted for fogging.
Mosquitoes and larvae
The most important part of mosquito control is dealing with standing water. Treating larvae before they become mosquitoes is usually more direct than spraying afterwards.
Abate 1% granules (larvicide)
For Culex, Aedes and other mosquito larvae; slow-release granules that last for a period in water.
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bti) granules / water-dispersible suspension
A biological mosquito larvicide for use while larvae are growing, in drains, gutters, standing water and similar.
Supporting equipment
Monitoring and supporting equipment help show whether a pest problem is continuing.
FLYLight fly trap
Ultraviolet light attracts insects onto a glue board, with the catch hidden inside rather than on show; suitable for restaurants, shops and other sensitive premises.
